Øresund Bridge

It was a bright, sunny day. I was crusing along at high speed on a road, water on both sides. Oh, wait! It was a bridge. And then, suddenly the road dipped in towards the water.

It's Globetrotting Monday and I'm here to take you on a ride along the Oresund Bridge. The Oresund brdge is a connection between Copenhagen in Denmark and Malmo in Sweden. This is perfect for travellers who want to commute between these two countries without flying. The Oresund bridge is a combination of railway and road. It has a twin track and a Dual carriageway, which is a four lane road. The Road is on the top of the bridge while the rail tracks take the lower berth.  This bridge carries more than 60,000 travellers every day.
The Oresund bridge

What is so special about this bridge, you may ask. The oresund bridge runs not only over the sea but also includes a four kilometer underwater tunnel and an island on the Danish side. The justification for digging an underwater tunnel instead of continuing the bridge above water is to avoid air traffic from the nearby Copenhagen International Airport.

The high bridge part of the Øresund Bridge has the longest cable-stayed main span of all bridges in the world. That goes for both road and rail traffic! And, the tunnel part is the world's longest underwater tube tunnel, also for both road and rail traffic.

It is an exhillerating experience taking in the views on both sides of the road. There is a bus every hour from the busy and touristy Copenhagen to the quaint and quiet Malmo. Same timings apply the other way too. The ride takes an hour and tickets are available with the driver. Once you enter Malmo, the bus covers all major attractions in the little town and drops you off near the central bus station.  However if you want a quick ride, the train is a better option.

Do remember that there are no passport inspections as part of the Schengen Agreement. If you are travelling by car or any other vehicle there is a toll fee.

If you find yourself in Sweden or in Copenhagen , do try to include this trip in your itinerary. For more information on the Oresund Bridge visit http://uk.oresundsbron.com/page/976
